The war in Bosnia and Herzegovina has left
behind a grim legacy of mines and ERW, which can be found in almost all parts
of the country. The leftover mines and ERW have a great impact on the society
in Bosnia and Herzegovina
and its economy. One fourth of populated places and one third of the
population in Bosnia and
Herzegovina
are affected by mines and ERW.
Most of the 13,077 of mine suspected areas were identified between the former
confrontation lines, stretching for more than 18,000 km. The estimated size
of suspected area contaminated by mines and ERW is about 1,555 sq km, or 3.04
% of the total land surface area.
Bosnia and Herzegovina
is among
the countries with the largest average number of mine and ERW casualties per
million inhabitants. For the time-period 1992 – 2010, the country had 7435
mine victims.
