Bosnia & Herzegovina is one of five countries formed after the split of Former Yugoslavia. The disintegration of Former Yugoslavia started first with Slovenia and then with Croatia proclaiming their independence that led to conflict, spreading to Bosnia. The Bosnian war started in 1992 and ended in 1995 with arrival of IFOR (Implementation Forces, EUROFOR today). In the last census taken in Yugoslavia, Bosnia had a population of 4,364,574, it is estimated that the post-war population is 4,007,608 (July 2004 est.). On 21th November 1995, in Dayton, Ohio, warring parties signed a peace agreement that brought to the end four years of ethnic conflict. The Dayton Agreement divided Bosnia & Herzegovina in to joint Bosniak/Croat Federation (about 51% of the territory) and the Bosnian Serb-led Republika Srpska (RS) (about 49% of the territory). |

It was a devastating war, with hundreds of thousands dead and many thousands of refugees who fled mostly to FRY, Germany, Croatia, Sweden and other countries. The Consequence of war was not only civilian casualties it was also devastation of almost all major towns and infrastructure with many mine fields together with unexploded items spread in the zones of separation in between the confronting armies. |

After the war (1996) the Bosnian military, together with humanitarian, commercial organizations and local civilian defense units started clearing contaminated fields. At that time there was approximately 40 mine action organizations working together to solve mine problems in BiH coordinated by the Bosnia and Herzegovina Mine Action Centre. landmine problem will stay serious issue for a very long time in Bosnia and Herzegovina, not only because of constant danger for safety of local population but also as big obstacle for reconstruction and further development of the county. Ex-confrontation lines and today mine suspected areas are sometime in easy accessible urban areas but also in terrains that could have large agricultural capacity for very weak economy of Bosnia. Today international support for mine action within region is reducing so last but largest capacity for demining will be the army. At the moment large foreign companies (NGO, commercial) are main carrier of mine action. The rate of mine accidents in BiH has reduced in the past few years partly due to well organized mine awareness training by MAC, Red Cross, UNHCR and other humanitarian organizations but problem of mine and UXO's contamination is still very much existing. |

The Main problem for Bosnia today is financial crisis (high unemployment) and return of the refugees and displaced persons. Today country is peaceful but under strong influence of EUFOR, UN, OSCE and Office Of High Representative (OHR) for democratic changes and faster integration of Bosnia and Herzegovina within Europe. |
