The war in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) has left behind a grim legacy of mines and other ERW, which can be found in almost all parts of the country. The leftover mines and ERW have a great impact on the society in BiH and its economy. One fourth of populated places and one third of the population in BiH is affected by mines and ERW. The estimated size of suspected areas contaminated by mines is 1.262,82 km2 or 2.5 % of the total land surface area.
Since 1992 there were registered 8,066 mine and ERW casualties in BiH. In the period after the war there were 1,688 casualties, of these 592 fatal. According to the NPA general assessment of contamination and impact of cluster munition remnants in Bosnia and Herzegovina, areas suspected to be contaminated by cluster munition remnants cover 12.17 km2, identified inside 79 local communities in 39 municipalities
