Until the end of 2013, NPA released through technical survey and clearance 20.52 square kilometers of areas contaminated with mines and cluster munition remnants, destroyed 9,558 landmines, 1,450 cluster munition remnants and 50,959 other pieces of ERW. NPA non-technical survey teams seconded to the BHMAC regional offices surveyed a total 332 sqaure kilometers of suspected areas.

Under the Norwegian People's Aid Programme for Humanitarian Demining (1996 – on-going) 199 square kilometres of the land that was contaminated with mines or was not used because it was suspected to contain mines or other explosive remnants of war was returned to local population for their use.
  • Slide7
With methodical detection, manual deminers continue their work in the same precise manner and detail, centimeter by centimeter searching ground for any hint of metal and landmines. When a signal from the detector is received they must get down on their knees and slowly prod ground for any landmine's.
  • Slide8
20 years after the war conflict, they are faced with much denser vegetation, and it slows their work, but still things have to be done. They must stay focused and methodical, and remove every mine, since there is a big possibility that a farmer or a child can find them in the future if it is not removed.

NPA began to work with MDD's in 1996. Today clearance with MDD’s became the most sophisticated type of clearance and provides final quality assurance for an area prepared with mechanical clearance. Once trained, qualified and accredited, both handlers and dogs are deployed to demine.
  • Slide10
MDD's in humanitarian demining, are used following Standard Operational Procedures in 2 different ways. One of the ways is on short lead, where MDD’s walk in close distance of handler and second one on 10 meters long lead. Suspected area is considered clean after search of at least 2 MDD Teams.
  • Slide 5
Norwegian People's Aid was one of the first organizations which applied Mechanical ground preparation. Today machines have been perfected and they became an important part of the tools that demining agencies have on their disposal.
  • Slide 6
Mechanical ground preparation sped up the process of clearance in certain areas considerably. It is very good to release agricultural land. Combined with manual demining or with MDD teams, this method becomes especially efficient for flat terrains.

Cluster bombs, or cluster munitions, are weapons that can contain hundreds of explosive submunitions. They are dropped from the air or fired from the ground and designed to break open in mid-air, releasing the submunitions, saturating an area that can be as wide as several football fields.
  • Slide13
NPA Liaison team is in constant work with community rising awareness of UXO and mines. Children are often attracted by the curious shape, color and small size of the bomblets and have mistaken them for toys, often picking them up and in that way killing or injuring themselves and others.
  • slide14
Cluster bombs and mines kill and injure too many civilians both during attacks, and after the conflict has ended. Mines and cluster bombs have posed a deadly and predictable threat in every conflict where they have been used and repeatedly caused excessive harm to civilians.
